Vitamin C serum helps protect your skin from free radicals, most dermatologists have recommended applying it in the morning to prevent damage during the day. After cleansing and balancing, apply 4 to 5 drops of NOVU’s Vitamin C Serum on face and neck.
When you apply sunscreen after Vitamin C serum, their benefits multiply. It is more effective at neutralizing free radical damage from sun exposure than just using sunscreen alone.
Vitamin C has a 72 hours reservoir effect and ascorbic acid is the only form of vitamin C derivative that contributes to this reservoir effect, and only at concentrations of 15% to 20%.
Vitamin C has a 72 hours reservoir effect, meaning that it remains effective on the skin for up to 72 hours, even if you rub or wash your skin. Skin reaches its peak reservoir of vitamin C after three consecutive days of applying a 15% concentration of ascorbic acid—that is what’s known as the reservoir effect.
In short, Vitamin C reservoir effect means our skin now has a supply of antioxidants to rejuvenate skin. Skin is always protected against free radical damage with successive release of Vitamin C in the deeper levels of the skin.
You can always use Vitamin C day and night. However, since the benefits of Vitamin C is to reduce free radicals damage by neutralizing them, it is most effective when used during the day as UV rays are the main culprit to photoaging.
Since Vitamin C using ascorbic acid has a reservoir effect of up to 72 hours, it is not necessary to apply it both day and night; this means that it would be a waste to apply the Vitamin C serum at night.
Not all Vitamin C are created equal. The best and most stabilized form of Vitamin C is formulated with ascorbic acid concentrations from 10% to 20% with a low PH of less than 3.5. For best absorption of the skin, it largely depends on the PH level and other ingredients which aid in stabilizing Vitamin C such as tocopherol.
At NOVU, our Vitamin C serum is formulated at 15% ascorbic acid with a low PH level of less than 3 and paired with hyaluronic acid for the maximum benefits of neutralizing free radicals while leaving the skin supple and hydrated; suitable for all skin types.
One thing to note: 15% and above concentrations of ascorbic acid might be stinging to sensitive skin. If you have very oily and sensitive skin, and just starting to use this form of Vitamin C, we suggest using the Vitamin C serum on alternate days for 2 weeks and once thereafter every morning to ensure that your skin is getting used to the concentrations and benefits of ascorbic acid.
